How to Do a V-Up
Lie on your back with your legs straight and together and your arms extended overhead.
Brace your abdomen and gently set the ribs toward the pelvis so you do not begin from a large lower-back arch.
Lift your shoulders and torso while raising both legs at the same time.
Keep the legs as straight as your hamstring mobility allows and reach the hands toward the feet.
Balance briefly on the back of the pelvis at the top without jerking or throwing the arms forward.
Lower the torso and legs together under control instead of dropping back to the floor.
Stop the set when you can no longer keep the movement smooth or you must use momentum to reach the top.

- Think about bringing ribs and thighs toward each other rather than only touching your toes.
- Use a small knee bend if hamstring mobility is limiting the top position.
- Make the lowering phase as controlled as the upward phase.
- Progress leverage before adding load.
- If hip flexors dominate and trunk control disappears, shorten the lever with a tuck-up variation.

- Throwing the arms to create momentum — Fix: Initiate the rep from the trunk and hips and keep the reach controlled.
- Dropping quickly from the top — Fix: Lower the torso and legs together for a deliberate eccentric phase.
- Forcing perfectly straight knees despite tight hamstrings — Fix: Allow a slight bend and improve range gradually.
- Starting from a large lower-back arch — Fix: Brace before the limbs leave the floor.
- Reaching with the neck instead of the torso — Fix: Keep the head aligned with the chest and let the rib cage move toward the pelvis.
- Using V-ups before easier core drills are controlled — Fix: Regress to tuck-ups, reverse crunches, or dead bugs.
About V-Up
The V-up is a bodyweight core exercise in which you lift your torso and straight legs at the same time until your body forms a V shape. It mainly trains the rectus abdominis while the hip flexors help raise the legs, with the obliques assisting trunk control. No equipment is required. Because the arms and legs create long levers, the V-up is usually better for intermediate trainees than complete beginners and is useful when you want a harder floor-based progression beyond crunches, reverse crunches, or tuck-ups.
V-Up Muscles Worked
V-ups combine trunk flexion with bilateral hip flexion.
- The rectus abdominis shortens the distance between the rib cage and pelvis while the hip flexors raise the legs.
- The obliques help stabilize the trunk and pelvis, and the quadriceps help keep the knees extended.
- EMG research on the supine V-up confirms that it creates substantial abdominal activity, but it should not be described as isolating a separate upper- or lower-ab muscle.

Technique: 2–3 sets of 5–8 reps or bent-knee tuck-ups while learning synchronized torso-and-leg movement.
Strength Focus
Strength-focused core work: 3–5 sets of 5–10 controlled reps, using slower eccentrics or light loading only after bodyweight form is consistent.

Why V-Ups Feel Harder Than Sit-Ups
A V-up raises the torso and legs simultaneously, so you are moving two long levers instead of mainly lifting the torso.
- That increases the coordination and hip-flexion demand and gives you less help from having the feet anchored.
- If standard sit-ups are easy but V-ups become sloppy immediately, leverage and timing are usually the limiting factors.
V-Up vs Jackknife: Are They the Same?
Many fitness sites use V-up, V sit-up, and jackknife sit-up interchangeably.

- A tuck-up or bent-knee jackknife shortens the lever and is an easier regression.
How to Progress to a Full V-Up
Start with reverse crunches or dead bugs for pelvic control, then practice tuck-ups with bent knees.
- Next, straighten the legs only as far as you can keep the rep smooth.
- Once you can perform controlled V-ups, make them harder with slower lowering, a brief top pause, or a light held load rather than rushing the reps.
Hamstring Tightness and V-Up Form
Limited hamstring flexibility can make perfectly straight legs difficult at the top.
- A small knee bend is preferable to rounding aggressively or jerking for extra reach.
- Treat straight-leg range as something to earn rather than forcing the toes to meet the hands on every rep.
V-Up Benefits
V-ups need no equipment, challenge the abs and hip flexors through a large coordinated movement, and provide an easy progression from simpler floor-based core exercises. They are especially useful for trainees who need dynamic compression strength for gymnastics-style or calisthenics movements.
V-Up vs Sit-Up
Both involve trunk flexion, but the V-up also raises both legs and therefore demands more hip-flexor strength, leverage control, and timing. Sit-ups are easier to scale for beginners; V-ups are better used when you can already perform controlled trunk-flexion and leg-raise exercises.
