What Is Daily Water Intake?
Daily water intake is more than the amount of plain water you drink from a bottle or glass.
Total water intake includes plain water, other beverages, and moisture contained in food.
That distinction matters because adult hydration recommendations are often quoted as total-water values, even though not all of that amount needs to come from plain drinking water.
This calculator uses general adult hydration references. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, medical conditions, medications, illness and other circumstances may change fluid needs.
How It's Calculated
This calculator maps the selected adult reference to National Academies Adequate Intake data rather than using a rigid body-weight formula. Adult men: 3.7 L/day total water (~3.0 L/day from beverages). Adult women: 2.7 L/day total water (~2.2 L/day from beverages). The difference between total water and beverage intake reflects water obtained from food in the population data. Why your actual needs may differ: Water requirements vary with physical activity, sweat rate, temperature, humidity, diet, body size, pregnancy, breastfeeding, illness, medications, and individual health conditions.

What to Do With Your Result
Use the beverage figure as a daily population reference, not as a rigid drinking target.
Your needs may rise when you exercise, sweat heavily or spend time in hot conditions. Exercise can raise fluid needs, but there is no single fixed exercise add-on that is correct for everyone.
Food and other beverages also contribute to total water intake. Drinks like tea, coffee and milk supply fluid, while fruits and vegetables provide significant moisture.
"Eight glasses a day" can be a simple reminder, but glass sizes differ and daily water also comes from food and other beverages.
More water is not always better. Drinking excessive amounts in a short period can dilute blood sodium and contribute to hyponatremia. Treat the calculator result as a reference rather than a quota you need to force yourself to exceed.
