How to Do Zottman Curl With Proper Form

01

Begin standing with dumbbells and palms forward.

02

Curl upward with the supinated grip.

03

Keep upper arms mostly fixed.

04

At the top rotate the forearms until palms face down.

05

Lower slowly with the pronated grip.

06

Reach full comfortable elbow extension.

07

Rotate back to palms up before the next rep.

Form Check & Technique

DO THIS (Technique Tips)

  • Use less weight than normal curls
  • Finish the supinated curl first
  • Rotate at the top
  • Lower slowly palms down
  • Reset only at the bottom

AVOID THIS (Common Mistakes)

  • Rotating too early
  • Using unclear grip phases
  • Too much weight
  • Wrists collapsing
  • Torso swinging
  • Rushing the eccentric
  • Forgetting to reset palms up

About Zottman Curl

The Zottman curl combines a palms-up supinated concentric with a palms-down pronated eccentric. The grip transition at the top is the defining feature.

Zottman Curl Muscles Worked

The lifting phase uses a supinated curl while the lowering phase uses pronation.

  • Grip changes alter mechanics, but the Zottman curl is not proven superior for total arm hypertrophy.

Exercise Variations & Alternatives

Why the Grip Changes at the Top

The top rotation separates the palms-up concentric from the palms-down eccentric.

Supinated Up, Pronated Down

Complete the curl before rotating if you want the classic Zottman pattern.

Zottman vs Reverse Curl

Reverse curls are pronated in both directions; Zottman curls are supinated up and pronated down.

Zottman vs Hammer Curl

Hammer curls stay neutral throughout; Zottman curls change grip.

Why the Eccentric Matters

The pronated lowering phase is part of the exercise identity, so do not rush it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What muscles do Zottman curls work?

They train the biceps, brachialis, brachioradialis, and forearm muscles.

Why rotate at the top?

To change from a supinated concentric to a pronated eccentric.

Rotate at top or while curling?

For the classic version, rotate after finishing the palms-up curl.

Zottman vs reverse curl?

Reverse stays pronated; Zottman goes up supinated and down pronated.

Zottman vs hammer curl?

Hammer stays neutral; Zottman changes grip.

Why lighter dumbbells?

The pronated lowering phase and grip transition usually limit load.

Should lowering be slower?

Yes; a controlled eccentric preserves the defining pronated phase.

Who was it named after?

The exercise is historically associated with strongman George Zottman.
