How to Do the Reverse Hyperextension With Proper Form
Set up on the reverse-hyper machine with your torso supported and hips near the edge of the pad.
Grip the handles securely and place the ankles or feet in the machine strap or lever.
Brace the trunk and begin with the legs hanging beneath the hips.
Extend the hips to raise the legs behind you using the glutes and hamstrings.
Stop around a controlled body-line position rather than throwing the legs excessively high.
Pause briefly without aggressively arching the lower back.
Lower the legs under control and repeat without using a large uncontrolled swing.

About Reverse Hyperextension
The reverse hyperextension is a posterior-chain machine exercise in which the torso stays supported while the legs move into hip extension behind the body. It trains the glutes, hamstrings, and lumbar extensors, but current evidence does not justify presenting it as a guaranteed spinal-decompression or rehabilitation exercise.
Reverse Hyperextension Muscles Worked
The glutes and hamstrings extend the hips while the lumbar extensors and multifidus contribute to trunk and spinal control.
- Research shows meaningful posterior-chain activation, but greater load does not produce a perfectly linear increase in every measured muscle.
