Cable Curl
How to Do Cable Curl With Proper Form
Set the pulley to its lowest position and attach a straight or curl bar.
Take an underhand or comfortable semi-supinated grip and step back until the cable stays taut.
Stand tall with wrists aligned and upper arms close to your sides.
Curl by flexing the elbows without swinging the hips or leaning back.
Keep the upper arms mostly still instead of driving the elbows far forward.
Reach the top of your controlled range and stabilize the attachment.
Lower slowly to full comfortable elbow extension.
Form Check & Technique
DO THIS (Technique Tips)
- Use the lowest pulley
- Keep upper arms near the torso
- Choose a wrist-friendly attachment
- Stand far enough back to keep tension
- Control the eccentric
AVOID THIS (Common Mistakes)
- Standing too close and losing tension
- Leaning backward
- Driving elbows far forward
- Bending wrists backward
- Using an uncomfortable attachment
- Cutting off the bottom range
- Letting the stack slam
About Cable Curl
The cable curl is a standing elbow-flexion exercise performed from a low pulley with a supinated or semi-supinated bar attachment. Cable force follows the pulley line, so resistance direction differs from a dumbbell curl.
Cable Curl Muscles Worked
The biceps brachii is the main target, with the brachialis and brachioradialis assisting elbow flexion and the forearm muscles stabilizing the wrist.

How Cable Direction Changes a Curl
Cable force follows the pulley line. Joint torque still changes as arm and cable angles change, so constant cable tension does not mean constant joint loading.
Straight Bar vs EZ-Style Attachments
Straight bars use more supination; angled attachments reduce required wrist and forearm rotation.
Cable Curl vs Dumbbell Curl
Dumbbells are loaded vertically by gravity; cables pull toward the pulley. Both can train the biceps effectively.
Why Elbow Position Matters
A112 keeps the upper arm near the torso. A122 Bayesian Cable Curl should own the arms-behind-body cable-curl intent.
How Far From the Stack?
Stand far enough to keep the cable taut without leaning. Use a repeatable foot position for progression.
