What Is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage describes the estimated proportion of your body mass that consists of fat. It is fundamentally different from body weight alone because two people with identical scale weight can have distinct proportions of fat mass and fat-free tissue.

This body fat percentage calculator does not directly measure subcutaneous or visceral fat tissue. Instead, it uses tape-based circumference measurements as predictors in the U.S. Navy body-density equations.

How It's Calculated

This calculator uses the published U.S. Navy circumference method developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center. All internal calculations convert inputs to centimeters before evaluating the sex-specific body density equations. For men, the equation predicts body density using the difference between waist and neck circumferences relative to height: Density = 1.0324 - 0.19077 × log10(Waist - Neck) + 0.15456 × log10(Height). Estimated Body Fat % = (495 / Density) - 450. For women, the equation includes hip circumference alongside waist and neck measurements: Density = 1.29579 - 0.35004 × log10(Waist + Hip - Neck) + 0.22100 × log10(Height). Estimated Body Fat % = (495 / Density) - 450. The female model requires hip circumference because fat distribution patterns differ systematically by sex in published population models.
