How to Do the Rack Pull With Proper Form

Set the rack pins or safety arms to your chosen starting height and place the bar securely on them.

Stand with the bar close to your legs and grip it using your normal deadlift grip.

Brace your trunk and set your hips so the shoulders remain slightly in front of or over the bar.

Create tension before pulling the bar from the pins.

Extend the hips and knees while keeping the bar close to the body.

Finish standing tall without leaning backward or hyperextending the spine.

Lower the bar under control back to the rack pins without bouncing.

About Rack Pull

A rack pull is a partial deadlift that begins with the bar elevated above its normal floor position. Raising the starting point shortens range of motion and usually allows heavier loads while reducing the knee-extension work required from the bottom of a full deadlift.

How High Should Rack Pulls Start?

Rack Pull vs Conventional Deadlift

Rack pulls begin from an elevated position and therefore use less range of motion. Conventional deadlifts start from the floor and demand more knee and hip motion.
