How to Do the Behind-the-Neck Press With Proper Form
Set a barbell in a rack around upper-chest height and take a grip that allows your forearms to stay comfortable in the press.
Unrack the bar, brace your trunk, and press it overhead to a stable starting position.
Keep your ribcage controlled and shoulders positioned so the bar can descend without forcing the joints.
Bend your elbows and lower the bar behind your head only as far as your available shoulder and upper-back mobility allows.
Keep the wrists stacked over the forearms instead of letting the bar drift far behind the body.
Press the bar upward until the elbows straighten without using aggressive leg drive or lower-back extension.
Stabilize overhead, then repeat with the same pain-free depth and bar path on every rep.

About Behind-the-Neck Press
The behind-the-neck press is a barbell overhead press variation in which the bar is lowered behind the head instead of in front of the face. It trains the deltoids and triceps, but the behind-head position demands more shoulder and upper-back mobility than a conventional front overhead press, so the range should never be forced.
Behind-the-Neck Press Muscles Worked
Like other overhead presses, the movement is driven mainly by the deltoids and triceps while the scapular muscles assist upward rotation and stabilization.
- Acute EMG differences between front and behind-head presses should not be interpreted as proof of superior long-term muscle growth.

Behind-the-Neck Press vs Front Overhead Press
Both are overhead presses, but the behind-head version places the shoulders in a more externally rotated and abducted position. The front press is usually easier to accommodate for lifters with limited shoulder or thoracic mobility.
How Much Mobility Does the Exercise Require?
You need enough shoulder external rotation, abduction, and upper-back positioning to place the bar behind the head without compensating through the neck or lower back. Mobility demands vary between lifters.
How Low Should the Bar Travel?
There is no universal depth that every lifter must reach. Lower only to the point where the shoulders, elbows, wrists, and neck remain comfortable and the bar path stays controlled.
What the EMG Research Actually Shows
A comparative study in trained bodybuilders found some differences in acute deltoid excitation between front and behind-head press variations. EMG is a measure of electrical activity during a task, not direct evidence that one variation produces more hypertrophy over time.
When a Front Press Is the Better Choice
If the behind-head position requires excessive arching, neck movement, or joint discomfort, a conventional overhead press, machine press, or other pain-free variation can train the same major pressing muscles without forcing the position.
