How to Do the Straight-Arm Pulldown With Proper Form
Set a cable pulley high and attach a straight bar, rope, or similar handle.
Grip the attachment and step back until your arms are extended overhead with light cable tension.
Use a small hip hinge and keep a soft, nearly fixed bend in the elbows.
Pull the upper arms down and back by extending at the shoulders.
Bring the attachment toward the thighs without turning the movement into a triceps pushdown.
Pause briefly with the lats engaged while keeping the ribs controlled.
Return the arms overhead under control without changing the elbow angle significantly.

About Straight-Arm Pulldown
The straight-arm pulldown is a cable shoulder-extension exercise in which the elbows remain almost fixed while the arms move from overhead toward the thighs. This reduces repeated elbow-flexion demand and makes the lats the primary target. Direct EMG research has also found greater lat activity than in a barbell pullover under the tested conditions.

Straight-Arm Pulldown vs Lat Pulldown
A standard lat pulldown combines shoulder movement with substantial elbow flexion. The straight-arm version keeps elbow angle almost fixed and emphasizes shoulder extension.
Straight-Arm Pulldown vs Pullover
Both train shoulder extension, but one uses cable resistance from standing while the other uses a free-weight arc. A 2022 EMG study found greater lat activity in the straight-arm pulldown than the barbell pullover under the tested conditions.
Should You Use a Bar or Rope?
Both can work. A straight bar creates a fixed hand spacing, while a rope allows the hands to separate slightly and may feel more comfortable for some shoulders.
How Far Forward Should You Lean?
Use only a small hip hinge. Excessive torso movement turns the exercise into a full-body cable swing and reduces control.
Why Do Your Triceps Work?
The triceps long head crosses the shoulder and can assist shoulder extension. Feeling some triceps does not mean the exercise has turned into a triceps pushdown unless the elbows are repeatedly bending and straightening.
