Diamond Push-Up
How to Do the Diamond Push-Up With Proper Form
Start in a high plank and place your hands close together beneath the sternum with the thumbs and index fingers near each other.
Adjust the exact hand position slightly if needed for wrist comfort while keeping the pressing base narrow.
Brace your abs and glutes so your body stays in one straight line from head to heels.
Lower your chest toward your hands while keeping the elbows relatively close to the torso.
Stop at the deepest position you can control without the shoulders rolling forward or the hips sagging.
Press the floor away until the elbows are extended while maintaining the narrow hand position.
Reset your plank and shoulder position at the top before the next repetition.
Form Check & Technique
DO THIS (Technique Tips)
- Keep the hands close but adjust slightly for wrist comfort
- Position the hands beneath the sternum rather than near the face
- Keep the elbows relatively close to the torso
- Maintain a rigid plank from head to heels
- Use a slightly wider close-grip version if a perfect diamond causes wrist discomfort
AVOID THIS (Common Mistakes)
- Placing the hands so close together that wrist pain limits the movement
- Positioning the hands too far forward toward the face
- Letting the elbows flare widely away from the torso
- Allowing the hips to sag
- Shrugging the shoulders toward the ears
- Reaching the head toward the floor instead of moving the body as one unit
- Using partial range because the narrow position is too difficult
About Diamond Push-Up
The diamond push-up is a narrow-hand push-up variation performed with the hands close together beneath the chest. It substantially increases triceps demand while still strongly recruiting the pectoralis major and anterior shoulder musculature. Recent EMG research comparing standard, diamond, and wide push-ups found the diamond position produced the highest relative activation for the measured pectoralis major and triceps.
Diamond Push-Up Muscles Worked
The narrow hand position increases elbow-extension demand and strongly recruits the triceps while the pectoralis major still contributes substantially to the press.

Sets & Reps Guidance
Technique / Learning
2-3 sets of 5-10 reps using a close-grip position you can perform without wrist discomfort.
Strength Focus
3-4 sets of 5-10 controlled reps, progressing with load or harder leverage once bodyweight reps are strong.
Muscle Growth (Hypertrophy)
3-4 sets of 8-15 reps with full range and stable elbows.

Why Diamond Push-Ups Hit the Triceps Harder
Bringing the hands close together creates a narrow pressing base and increases elbow-extension demand. That makes the triceps a larger limiting factor than in a standard or wide push-up.
Do Diamond Push-Ups Work the Chest?
Yes.
- A triceps-focused variation is not a chest-free movement.
- Recent EMG research measured strong pectoralis-major activation during diamond push-ups.
Diamond Push-Up vs Regular Push-Up
The standard push-up is the better balanced default, while the diamond version increases triceps demand and requires more control from a narrow hand position.
Diamond Push-Up vs Wide-Grip Push-Up
Diamond push-ups create much greater elbow-extension demand. EMG research does not support the old assumption that wide push-ups automatically create more chest activation than narrow variations.
What If the Diamond Hand Position Hurts Your Wrists?
You do not need a mathematically perfect diamond. Move the hands slightly apart while keeping the base narrow, or use push-up handles if a neutral wrist position feels better.
