How to Do the Deficit Push-Up With Proper Form
Place two stable handles, parallettes, blocks, or equal-height supports slightly wider than shoulder width.
Grip or place your hands securely and step into a rigid high-plank position.
Brace your abs and glutes so your body stays in one line from head to heels.
Lower your chest between the supports while keeping the elbows on a comfortable diagonal.
Descend below hand level only as far as your shoulders remain comfortable and controlled.
Press through the supports until the elbows are extended without losing trunk position.
Reset at the top before beginning the next repetition.

About Deficit Push-Up
The deficit push-up is a push-up variation performed with each hand elevated on a stable handle, block, or platform so the chest can descend below hand level. The added hand elevation increases the available range of motion compared with a standard floor push-up, but direct long-term research has not established that deficit push-ups automatically produce greater chest hypertrophy.
Deficit Push-Up Muscles Worked
The main pressing muscles are the same as in a standard push-up.
- Elevating the hands allows greater shoulder extension and a deeper bottom position, increasing available range of motion.
- That biomechanical difference should not be converted into a claim of proven superior hypertrophy.

What Makes a Push-Up a Deficit Push-Up?
The hands are elevated on stable supports so the chest can travel below hand level. That increases available bottom-range motion compared with a floor push-up.
Does More Range Automatically Mean More Growth?
Not automatically.
- The deficit clearly permits more range of motion, but direct long-term deficit-versus-standard push-up hypertrophy research is limited.
- Treat greater ROM as a training feature, not as proof of superior muscle growth.
How High Should the Handles Be?
Start with a small deficit. Increase handle height only when you can control the deeper position without shoulder discomfort, torso collapse, or bouncing.
