How to Do Cable Crossovers With Proper Form
Attach single handles to both cable stacks and set both pulleys to the same starting height.
Grip the handles and step forward until the cables remain under tension, then use a stable staggered stance with a small forward torso lean.
Set your shoulders down and back and keep a small, consistent bend in both elbows.
Let the arms open under control until you feel a comfortable chest stretch without losing your ribcage and shoulder position.
Sweep the upper arms forward and inward in a wide arc while keeping the elbow angle nearly unchanged.
Bring the hands together or slightly past one another without turning the movement into a press or rounding the shoulders.
Return slowly along the same arc until the chest is stretched again, keeping control of the cable stacks throughout.

- Keep the elbow bend nearly fixed from the stretched position to the squeeze
- Lead the motion with the upper arms instead of simply moving the hands
- Use a staggered stance so the cable stacks cannot pull you backward

- Return slowly and keep tension instead of letting the stacks pull your shoulders open
AVOID THIS (Common Mistakes)
- Using too much weight and turning the movement into a standing press
- Changing elbow bend significantly during each repetition
- Letting the shoulders roll forward at the end of the crossover
- Using excessive torso swing to move the handles
- Going so deep that the shoulders lose a stable position
- Letting the stacks snap back during the eccentric phase
- Assuming the hands must cross far past one another for the chest to work
About Cable Crossover
The cable crossover is an isolation-style chest exercise that trains the pectoralis major by bringing the upper arms forward and inward against cable resistance. Cable height changes the line of pull, so the exercise can be performed from high-to-low, roughly horizontal, or low-to-high without changing the basic goal of controlled shoulder adduction.

The pectoralis major is the primary mover during shoulder horizontal adduction.
- The anterior deltoid assists, while the serratus anterior and other shoulder-girdle muscles help control the scapula and torso as the cables pull backward.

2-3 sets of 12-15 reps with light resistance while learning stance, elbow position, and pulley height.
Strength Focus
Use cable crossovers mainly as accessory work; 3-4 sets of 8-12 controlled reps is more practical than maximal low-rep loading.

Mid-Height Cable Crossover
A pulley position around shoulder height creates a mostly forward-and-inward arm path and is the best default for the core cable crossover movement.
High-to-Low Cable Crossover
With the pulleys above shoulder height, the hands travel downward and inward. This changes the line of pull toward a descending fly path and is commonly used to emphasize the sternocostal region without claiming complete regional isolation.
Low-to-High Cable Fly
With the pulleys set low, the hands travel upward and inward. This changes the line of pull toward the clavicular or upper-chest region while still requiring the whole pectoralis major to contribute.
Cable Crossover vs Pec Deck
Both train chest adduction. The pec deck supplies a stable, machine-guided path, while the cable crossover lets you alter pulley height, stance, torso position, and arm path.
Continuous Cable Tension
Cables keep resistance applied as the hands move across the body, which makes it easier to maintain tension near the shortened position than with a traditional dumbbell fly. That does not make cables automatically superior; it simply gives the exercise a different resistance profile.
